Jan visits Kochi Prefecture - Shikoku, Japan!

Shikoku - Japan's Forth Largest Island!
- Kochi Prefecture (July, 2003)

Part 1 Part 2
Yuka and I flew in to Kochi airport from Tokyo, and then got on a train to Nakamura.  The goal of our trip was to see Japan's last undammed, naturally flowing river, namely Shimanto-gawa. We rented bicycles from a local hotel and decided to venture up along the river.  Shimanto-gawa is known for the strange bridges crossing it, one of which can be seen in the above picture.

A random picture of the river.  For non-Japanese speakers, it should be noted that the "gawa" in Shimanto-gawa is a derivation of "kawa", meaning river. We went on a boat trip of the river, and the captain offered to fry us live river shrimps to eat.  Somewhat hesitantly, we accepted, though it was not a very enjoyable meal.

In addition to unsecured bridges, Shimanto-gawa is renowned to have Japan's tastiest unagi (=eel).  It is evidently very expensive compared to regular unagi, which is usually artificially raised in various production facilities. Supposedly, it is possible to swim in the river, and there are ample opportunities for rafting and kayaking.

On the boat, Yuka and I got the chance to take part in the rowing. Evidently, the rowing is just for fun.  The boat evidently has an engine.

There is no point in arguing; I look very attractive wearing this stupid hat. It may seem like I am meditating, but that would be too advanced for me.  Actually, I am just splashing my feet in the river.
