Yuka and I watched the movie "Cellular" over the weekend, it was painfully boring and I actually hoped for the kidnapped victims to get killed. Kim Basinger is an absolutely horrendous actress and should be barred from acting.

Today we went for a round of bowling. While I have always been a rather mediocre bowler, because I enjoy reading and other intellectual activities, I thought it would be unnatural if I were good at bowling. After all, the only successful bowlers that I can think of are characters like Al Bundy and Homer Simpson.

Some old Japanese guy, however, quickly convinced me that it is not my big brains that are stopping me from becoming a great bowler, it is rather a lack of intelligence. In fact, it turns out I have been holding the ball wrong the last few times I have been bowling. To be honest, I have only bowled about three times during the last 10 years, but I was at least convinced that I knew how to hold the ball. Don't get me wrong, I am still a mediocre bowler, but at least now I can easily score above a hundred (with the help of some wind and/or a friendly earthquake).

We also went to the newly opened Costco in Kawasaki. For those of you that do not know the company, Costco is the largest membership warehouse club chain in the world based on sales volume. At their store in Kawasaki, basically all the products are imported from the US, and the sizes are enormous. The store is located in a working class area, and it was easy to see that the shoppers at the store were not among Japan's foremost intellectuals. I think Japan has been doing rather well without 10 kg boxes of M&Ms and similar crap, but even many Japanese are starting to think that big size is always better than small size.

While I am all for consumer choice, I hope that the Japanese will not get too inspired by the American attitude to food. Having lived here for a while, I know that a good Japanese diet helps one stay slim and fit, while an American diet of super-sized crap does not.

Finally, while I generally have an issue with many French people, this guy is really fantastic... Oh wait, with the new President and this guy, I am willing to give them another go:
