Mads Gilbert Regrets Supporting the September 11 Attacks
To give the Norwegian doctor and political activist Mads Gilbert some credit, today he stated that he regrets the comments he made in support of the September 11 attacks on the United States. He insists that he is actually against terrorist attacks on civilians, which may seem strange to readers who have seen his recent publicity stunt for Hamas.
Mr. Gilbert believes that he is the currently a victim of an active campaign by Israel to discredit his name:
"The campaign to discredit my name will certainly increase in force, and is part of the propaganda war that Israel is conducting over the entire world".
Comments like these shows that Mr. Gilbert is out of touch with reality. The questions that have been raised regarding Mr. Gilbert are completely legitimate, and Israel is certainly not behind them:
1. By presenting completely one-sided criticism of Israel and accusing Israel of deliberately targeting civilians in Gaza, Mr. Gilbert has not done anything to help solve the conflict.
2. As I commented in my January 5 blog entry, a lot of his comments either do not make sense or are false. This comes in addition to the staged reporting.
3. While in the Gaza hospital, Mr. Gilbert complained of having numerous victims and not sufficient resources to help them. Still, he dedicated significant time to spreading propaganda in the media rather than to help patients. A professor of medical ethics at The School of Public Health at Boston University, George Annas, comments that this may violate the Hippocratic Oath:
"Problems might arise if he has wounded and sick patients and has been taking time away to do interviews and people are dying."
4. Mr. Gilbert and other leftist extremists show no interest in much worse human rights abuses or conflicts in other parts of the world. Where are the street protests against China's occupation of Tibet and Turkey's occupation of Kurdistan, to just mention to examples? Critics of Israel often feel a need to emphasize that they are not antisemitic, but they have problems explaining why they are just interested in this one particular conflict. Mr. Gilbert even believes that Israel and the Jews are out to get him.
After returning to Norway, Mr. Gilbert commented that the following needs to happen:
1. The bombing of Gaza needs to stop
2. The borders to Gaza must be opened
3. A political solution to the Palestinian problem must be reached
Mr. Gilbert shows no interest in the need to stop rockets being fired into Israel or in how to stop the smuggling of weapons into the Gaza strip. What he fails to realize is that the conflict is a religious conflict. Hamas does not accept the state of Israel, but it also seeks to exterminate all Jews. As most extremist Islamists, they also hold stone age views on the rights of women and gays. The world boycotted South-Africa for its apartheid regime in the 1980s, but the Western world is showing no sign of standing up for the rights of women in the Middle East.
