2003 Roundup
Somehow, the year 2003 came to an end.  In 20 years or so, we should be better capable of analyzing what happened in this year and what impact it had on world history.  As far as yours truly is concerned, I summarized my own experiences in a short Christmas letter.  In addition to the picture collections below, I have created a separate collection on my Japan Travel and a separate page on World Travel.  Thank you, 2003, for a interesting year!

August 2003, Yokosuka Navy Base
The American army has bases located all over Japan, though most are in Okinawa or in various locations around Tokyo.  Yuka and I went to visit one of the latter, namely the Yokosuka Navy Base in Kangawa Prefecture.

May/June 2003, Nagatoro
Yuka is a big fan of extreme sports, and together we visited Nagatoro in Saitama to do both kayaking and rafting.  We went there on three different occasions in springtime, and enjoyed some excellent fun on the river!

May 2003, Niigata/Gunma
On a Saturday in May, I visited the Tanigawa peaks.  These beautiful mountains are located on the border of Niigata and Gunma, and I took a cable-car up to a mountain to see the view.  In addition, I got to eat some raw deer and horse meat!

May 2003, Tokyo
In late May, the Norwegian Prime Minister paid an official visit to Japan.  In addition, Norwegians gathered at the Norwegian embassy in Tokyo to celebrate the nation's constitution day on May 17.  I attended many events, and even got to meet the prime minister.

April 2003, Kamakura
While it is common knowledge that Kyoto used to be the capital of Japan, not many people are aware that also Kamakura served the same function for quite a few years.

May 2003, Okutama
Chichibu is an area of natural beauty compromising one ninth of metropolitan Tokyo.  In early May, I did some hiking near the town of Okutama to escape the crowds of Tokyo.

March/April 2003, Saitama & Tokyo
When the cherry trees start blossoming in Japan, everyone knows that spring has arrived.  In order to enjoy the season to the fullest, I went on a couple of trips to view the beautiful sakura trees.

April 2003, Enoshima
I had the pleasure of being invited to a boat race in Kanagawa prefecture, and we were incredibly lucky with the weather.  The sun was shining, and Mount Fuji was prettier than ever.
