Trip to Matsushima!
- September 23 (2002), Miyagi Prefecture

Matsushima is situated in northern Honshu, about 30 minutes from Sendai - a city known for beautiful women and some excellent McDonalds restaurants (try the Big Mac, it is a killer!).  Matsushima constitutes one of the Nihon Sankei, or to put it in English; Three Great Sights of Japan.  The other two are Miya-jima (close to Hiroshima) and the sandspit at Amanohashidate (close to Kyoto).

Basho, a famous poet or baseball player from the 17th century (hard to remember which), reportedly was only able to utter "Matsushima, ah! Matsushima! Matsushima", when first visiting. To me, his enthusiasm for the place is mildly speaking mysterious.  Despite its urban centers and environmental destruction, Japan is a rather beautiful country.  Matsushima is hardly anything special.

Here, another view of Matsushima.  Sit back and relax; There will be plenty more to come. A picture to prove that I went to Matsushima, not that I assume it to be of interest to anyone.

Looking much better than I do, though that does not serve as much of a compliment, Yuka can here be seen with Matsushima in the background. Actually, I have Yuka to thank for being able to go.  Her parents had one spare day left on their 3-day Shinkansen pass, enabling Yuka and Jan to travel where only a billion Japanese have been before us.
